Who Are You Without the Title?

Titles are useful. They tell people where we sit, what we do, and what we are responsible for. The trouble begins when a title starts answering a question it was never meant to answer: Who are you?

For years, I let achievement carry too much of my identity. When business was strong, I felt strong. When the results disappeared, so did much of what I believed about myself. I learned the hard way that an identity built only on performance has nowhere to stand when performance changes.

The deeper work is to name what remains when the role, recognition, and scoreboard are stripped away.

Are you courageous? Present? Curious? Faithful? A builder? A steady friend? Someone who brings energy into a room? Someone who tells the truth with love? Someone who creates possibilities for other people?

These are not branding words. They are standards for how you choose to live, especially when life gets hard.

The future you want will ask more of your identity than your résumé. It will require you to become the person capable of holding the relationships, opportunities, responsibilities, and joy you are writing toward. That transformation does not begin with a new title. It begins with a sentence you are willing to live.

Try this: Complete the words, ‘I am the kind of person who…’ Do not describe what you produce. Describe how you show up. Then ask where that sentence is already true and where it needs more evidence.

The 10-Year Letter brings identity into the future in a way a goal list cannot. Instead of only naming what you will have, you name who you will be. That changes the choices available to you today.

A title can be taken away. A deeply chosen identity becomes a compass.
